The business model, in plain words

Why is Copera free?

Software is cheap to build now, so we give the workspace away and sell the intelligence that works inside it, at one flat price.

An essay5 min read

01The old deal

Seats were a bet on headcount.

For as long as most of us have bought work software, it has come with one price tag: per person, per month. Hire someone, and the bill goes up. Add a contractor, a client, an intern, and it goes up again.

The software didn't get more expensive to run with every hire. The price did. Per-seat pricing ties what you pay to how many people you employ, not to anything the software does for them.

So teams learned to ration. Does the new hire really need an account? Can the client share a login? Can the designer just get screenshots? Tools meant to bring a team together ended up deciding who got to be on it.

That deal made sense while software was hard to build. It isn't anymore.

02What changed

Software got cheap.

AI writes software now. Not all of it, and not perfectly, but enough to change who gets to build what. Companies are already building their own internal tools with it: the tracker, the dashboard, the small app nobody wanted to pay a vendor for.

When the thing you sell gets cheaper to make every year, renting it out per person has an expiry date. You can keep raising the rent and hope nobody notices. Or you can stop charging for the part that's getting cheap.

What didn't get cheap is the work itself. Reading the thread you missed. Turning a meeting into tasks. Following up with the customer who has been waiting two days. That takes intelligence, and every task an AI does runs on real hardware that costs real money, every single time.

Software isn't the moat anymore. Intelligence is.

03Our bet

So we gave the software away.

There's an old rule in technology strategy, and Joel Spolsky put it best in 2002:

“Smart companies try to commoditize their products' complements.”

Joel Spolsky, Strategy Letter V

In plain words: make the thing that goes with your product cheap, and people want more of your product. For AI at work, the thing that goes with it is the workspace.

An AI teammate is only as useful as what it knows. The decision from Tuesday's meeting. The customer who's been waiting. The page that explains how you price. None of that is on the internet. It lives in your workspace, in every message, meeting, page and decision.

So we made the workspace free. Chat, boards, docs, tasks, calls, full history and guests, for as many people as you want. The more of your team's work lives in Copera, the more the AI can do with it, and the more it's worth paying for.

How Copera's model worksTwo layers. At the bottom is the workspace, which is free: it is where your team's context lives, in messages, meetings, pages, tasks, files and decisions. On top of it is the intelligence, sold at one flat price: AI teammates that use that context to do the work. Context flows up from the workspace to the intelligence, and finished work flows back down into the workspace. The intelligenceOne flat price

That's the whole model: we give away the complement and sell the thing it makes more valuable. The free part isn't a trial or a teaser. It's the reason the paid part works.

04The bill

What we charge for, exactly.

Three lines. One of them is zero.

A Copera bill, every monthUS dollars
  • The workspace

Chat, boards, docs, tasks, calls, full history and guests, for unlimited members.

    $0forever

  • The AI plan

One flat monthly price for the whole workspace, from $20 to $950. Nothing is charged on top unless you choose to add credit.

    from $20a month

  • Add-ons

Infrastructure someone rents to us every month: an email inbox at $5, a WhatsApp number at $15, more storage from $5. Only if you need it.

    from $5a month, each

What we never charge for

  • Members, however many$0
  • Seats, on any plan$0
  • Chat and calls$0
  • Boards, docs and tasks$0
  • Any workspace feature$0
  • Your full history$0
  • Guests$0
  • Mobile and desktop apps$0
  • Storing messages and docs$0
  • Overage, ever$0

Every workspace also gets 5 GB of storage for files and recordings, and a weekly AI allowance to try things with. Text never counts toward storage.

05In writing

What you can count on.

None of these are new. Each one is already in writing, and links to the page that says so.

  1. 01

    No per-seat pricing.

Our terms say it plainly: “Members are never charged per seat, on any plan.”

  2. 02

    Your data trains nothing.

Your conversations, documents, meetings and files are never used to train any AI model, ours or anyone else's. We only work with AI providers that commit to that in writing.

    Your data isn't for sale.

We do not sell your personal data, and we do not use your content for advertising.

    A bill you can predict.

You pay the plan price every month. There’s no metered bill and no overage: extra credit is only added when you buy it, or by auto top-up if you turn it on, capped at a monthly limit you set.

    Leave whenever you like.

Cancel any time, in two clicks. Your workspace drops back to the free plan and keeps everything: every message, document, board and file.

  6. 06

    Notice before prices rise.

If we raise the price of a plan or add-on you pay for, you hear about it at least 30 days ahead, and you can cancel before it takes effect. Per-model AI rates follow what providers charge and can change sooner; your plan price can’t.

06Questions

Fair questions.

Is it a trial?

No. There's no expiry date and no seat limit. Bring two hundred people and use it for five years: the workspace stays $0. We only charge when you want AI doing the work, or when you need infrastructure like an inbox or more storage.

What happens when the AI allowance runs out?

AI pauses until the week resets and your allowance comes back. Everything else keeps running: chat, boards, docs and calls work exactly as before. If you need AI right away, add extra credit, which never expires, or move up a plan. There's no overage, ever.

Will it stay free?

The platform is free forever, for any number of people. That's on our pricing page, and it's the whole model: we earn from the intelligence, not from the workspace. We do not charge per seat, and we're not planning to. If we ever raise the price of a paid plan you're on, our terms give you at least 30 days' notice and the chance to cancel first.

Who owns my data?

You do. Our terms say you keep ownership of everything you create, upload or share, and Copera claims none of it. Copera never uses your content to train AI models, and never uses it for advertising. You can get a copy by writing to privacy@copera.ai. Copera is built on SOC 2 and ISO 27001 certified infrastructure.

How do you make money?

Two ways. Workspaces that want AI doing real work pick a monthly AI plan for the whole workspace, from $20 to $950, and can top it up with extra credit. Some also add infrastructure we rent, like inboxes, WhatsApp numbers and storage. Above 100 people, AI counts double unless we agree a rate for your size; the workspace itself stays free at any size. That's the whole list, and it's all on the pricing page. We do not sell your personal data.

Bring the whole team.Pay for the intelligence.

The workspace is free for everyone you work with. The AI plan starts at $20 a month, for all of them at once.

No card. No seats. No trial clock.
